365 pictures in 365 days. Wow. I can honestly say that I took a picture every single day this year. I'm shocked. I half-heartedly started the project and thought I'd be doing well to get to March. But then I got really into it. What a fun way to document life. And a really good way to force me to use my camera (especially early on in the year- it's hard to know what to take pictures of when it's just you, your husband and your dog). I compiled a few of my favorite shots from the year on my other blog. Go check them out. But now, one more photo- number 365 of 365. I was thinking that I needed to come up with something really great or profound. Well I wasn't thinking about it too long and what I came up with isn't profound at all. But it is the perfect end to the year and to the 365.......

Drinking mocha in a snuggie with good friends on New Years Eve. And likely toasting to the end of Project 365. It was fun while it lasted but this year my goal is to want to pull my camera out and capture life with feeling- not just pulling the camera out because I have to. We'll see how that goes! :) For everyone starting the 365 in 2011, have fun with it!

Look, ma- no socks! Can you believe that it's December, it's Iowa, and it's really warm out?! (I'm not exactly sure how warm it got to- I'm on break and haven't watched the news or checked in with the real world all week- but it's really warm!) And all of our snow is gone which means no sledding with the boys tomorrow. I heard (okay I saw it on facebook) that the weather is supposed to get bad again so we'll definitely take today as a blessing!

Other than the actual taking of photos- I sat in the basement at this desk pretty much all day. I edited, scheduled, replied to emails, etc, etc all day long- and still have a lot of catching up to do! I am so thankful that my 'real' job has these breaks throughout the year or I'd never been caught up! (As if I ever am anyway.....)

Some friends came over for the (late) Iowa game. R&I were cheering for the Big 12 team but our friends were 'behind' the Hawks. In the 'tail end,' the Hawks pulled it off. Lucky Hawks.

I'm seriously terrible at getting pictures of life lately! Maybe my new year's resolution can be to do a better job of it. Once again, my 365 photo was taken at the end of the day (just a couple minutes ago actually) as I realized I forgot to take a picture of anything today! Our good friends (the P family!) was over tonight. We hadn't seen them since before Gabe's birthday (forever ago) so I slaved in the kitchen all day and made him this birthday cake- unless his brother happens to be here tomorrow and I pull it out tomorrow saying I made it just for his birthday.

In case you were taking me seriously (though it is day 361 so by now you should know better), neither of those scenarios are true. My SIL brought the cake over and I'm trying to pull it off as my own. Just like I did with her rolls. :)

R's last day of work for the year. We headed south to beat the snow that was forecasted to come in later that night. It didn't show up for another 24 hours which meant we were able to drive to pick up our nephew then niece after school. We even got to Maddox's school in time for the Christmas party. Lucky us. :)

R & Cols hanging out before Colson's marshmallow breakfast. Watching Toy Story 3. (Neither of us had seen it before this weekend) I loved it. R said he was disappointed because it was so unrealistic- "That would never happen" was what he had to say about it. :)

Reminds me of the neighbor boy saying 'Twilight isn't even real' because vampires don't play baseball.....

We missed Coop this morning and we are so glad he is doing better!!

I did take photos this day- just not this photo.

I took a lot of photos of this beautiful newborn girl (please promise me you'll click the link and ooh and aw over how adorable she is!).

I took photos while hanging out with the in-laws (only I took them on my sister-in-law's camera just messing around- Kerry you better not have deleted ours!). :)

And I took photos when R&I made it back to our cabin where we stayed. Only it was already after midnight so at that point I decided a photo of the actual cabin itself in daylight (though taken the next morning) would make for a better photo of the day then what I had on my own camera. R will thank me for that. :)

I've been thinking about 1 Thessalonians 5:16 a lot lately. Be joyful always. It's my signature on my email. Our tagline on our Christmas card. Be joyful always. Joy. What a simple word that packs so much. Today it came to me in the form of gifts and hugs from students. It came to me in the form of a 7 year old neighbor girl's smile when she remembered all the steps on the sewing machine without a bit of help. It came to me in the 5 meaningful minutes I got to spend with R. And Kota greeting me at the door. And encouraging emails from friends. I really do have a lot to be joyful about. always.

I know it just looks like a DIY picture but it's really more than that.

1.) Those little sewing hands belong to a 7 year old. We had a sewing date tonight. I really thought I'd sew and she'd stand by and hold the fabric and trim the threads once in awhile. Actually, she pretty much sewed by herself and I felt like I was getting in her way. She said, "Heidi, we should really do this more often."

2.) That bracelet over that big hand is from a pretty special girl. She randomly came in to eat lunch with me one day and to tell me her story. At that point, she sort of just implanted herself into a corner of my heart so when she gave me this bracelet (that she made special for me) and a hug today it really made my job seem worth it.

My heart is full.

As the Day ____ numbers keep getting bigger and bigger, I can't believe how close we are to the end of the year. It snuck up on me. I had good intentions of getting Christmas cards ordered, addressed, and mailed out early this year but Christmas snuck up on me too. The cards did finally get here so now maybe I'll find some time to get them addressed.... Or I'll just take a photo of one and email it to everyone. That might just be easier. :)

My husband makes me toast (almost) every morning before work. Lately he's been making the cinnamon sugar variety. Only something about it wasn't quite right. Sometimes I get discouraged with my 'real' job. It's mentally challenging and exhausting.

But sometimes, sometimes, it pays off. One thing that's great about this 'double life' in the working world is that I get to work with newborns, toddlers, middle schoolers, high schoolers, and college age students all in the same week (sometimes day!). I really love working with all of those ages but I have to admit- there's something about compliments and hugs from middle schoolers that packs a bigger punch.

Sometimes I really do love my job. Both of them.

We met Todd for lunch and some 'quick' shopping. While we were out, we got several things taken care of for the basement. When we returned, R's dad had been to the house and had also gotten several things taken care of for the basement. We are getting so close to being able to use this space! It's pretty exciting!!

I learned a lot from this little guy today.

First as we were filling out our "What are you thankful for?" slips for the day- M said he was thankful for play doh. (He was playing with play doh at the time.) We all thought that was a pretty silly thing to be thankful for considering everything else he's blessed with. Aren't you thankful for mommy? for Morgan? for friends? for aunt H? a place to live?

"I'm thankful for play doh."

I'm sure he is thankful for all of those other people/things we mentioned but he's also thankful for the simple things in the here and now.

Lord- give me the heart to take a look around and be thankful for the little things that are a blessing. Help me to see the good in this very second. The right here, right nows of life. Amen!

Oh- and the photo. Maddox picked out the items for "his new friend" (our shoebox gift). I'm sure we made the perfect box for a 4 year old boy! The only thing Maddox wanted in there that we couldn't fit was a basketball. I think he chose some really great things! I'm so thankful for this little guy!

I really meant to take a patriotic photo today. I'd wanted to get a photo of a flag and didn't get to. Then I was reading on facebook what R's cousin's husband wrote to his wife.

"Saw a 5 or 6 yr old girl holding a baby maybe 12 months old pretty sad no parents around anywhere. She acted as if it was normal and from talking to interperters she was probably in a care taker role. didnt make me feel sad though?! made me feel thankful for what our kids have yet not sad kinda wierd love ya."

Made me feel thankful for a night of reading books on the couch with Mr. Maddox. And thankful for the men and women that are sacrificing time with their little loved ones to serve our country.

The longest I was off the couch for the day was to start narrowing down my 30 for 30 items. First go through didn't work so well so I took another nap. I even fell asleep during the ISU game. I did wake up when it was 24-10 and get to watch the (almost really amazing) end. What a heartbreaker!! And no more Nebraska games for us!

This photo was taken in the drive-through lane at the pharmacy. I absolutely love our small town clinic. I show up. Get right in. Meet with the nurse. My Dr comes in right away. I get a thorough check over. And she's interested in all the minor details. She sends my script to the pharmacy (that's located on the other side of the parking log). AND the pharmacy has a drive-through. How convenient. Makes being sick a little less miserable!

I know I have fingerless gloves somewhere... but I haven't pulled out the winter works yet. In the meantime, this set of gloves with the finger tip missing does the trick.

Speaking of grandma traditions..... Pie is another one of those tasty treats I miss!

Mom sent some pie (and banana bread) up with my sister to leave for us this weekend. I'm not going to pretend that if I have a pie I wont eat a slice for breakfast everyday until it's gone. It's gotta be a serving of fruit and grain though, right? ;)

(I'm sure the banana bread was good too but she only sent enough for my brother-in-law. Maybe she'll read my blog and take pity on me and mail me a loaf of banana bread though..... ) :)

Popcorn Balls might be one of my favorite (ever) Halloween treats. Great Grandma Durrell used to always make them at Halloween (her house is the only house I ever remember trick-or-treating at). Grandma Helen used to always make them (with the red jello). And most recently, Grandma K took over the red jello style and carried on the tradition for us. I love all of my grandmas for so many different reasons but one thing I have really appreciated in recent years is that my only remaining living grandma has helped carry on the traditions I miss from my other grandmas. Especially when they are as yummy as this one!

R&I (and J and a bunch of other people from around the state) took kids to the health summit today. Yes, we learned all about healthy choices all day then I came home and made some loaded mashed potatoes. Eh. I always try to justify it by saying we had help eating it... and I'm so not above that today- even if we were at the health summit all day. :) So, in my defense, R's sister and her bf ate dinner with us tonight. It was great to see them! (And to have someone to share those loaded mashed potatoes with.)

When I was working on flowers for the M&Ms I made a red one. It came in handy on the kick off of red ribbon week since my only red shirts are t-shirts from other schools R&I have taught (or coached) at. I figured this little red would be a little more neutral than another school's mascot....

Oh- And bonus photo because I'm wondering just how it is that everyone manages to get photos of themselves in the mirror that come out? (Well maybe cleaning the mirror and turning off the flash would be a good start... but that would require me to clean... and to hang around home waiting for the sun to come up.)

We had some surprise visitors after church today. AND they brought us lunch! Nobody does that! (Well- except for their sister-in-law!) These guys all take great care of us. We are blessed to be so loved.

(It was her birthday last week so I whipped together my quick desert with no special ingredients that I make whenever I need something fast and easy. What we lacked in frosting, we made up for in candles!)

PB&M&M Crumble Bars

Cream:

2 eggs

3/4 C peanut butter

3/4 C shortening

3/4 C sugar

3/4 C brown sugar

Mix in:

3/4 tsp baking powder

1 1/4 tsp baking soda

2 C flour

Press 2/3 of mixture into ungreased 9x13 pan. Drop a few handfuls of M&Ms on top. Crumble remaining PB mixture on top. Bake at 350F 20-25 minutes.

I wanted to take a photo of my table set up from today's mini-sessions. I had it set up all cutesy for the morning sessions but when we went back this afternoon, the place was packed! So I'm cheating and using a photo I snagged of M&M's hats that they wore for their photos. I matched them to the amazingly awesome coats their Uncle Cole picked out. I made them at school so the girls could see a simple sewing project. (I try to do a lot of little projects like that in front of them during this unit- have any good ideas for me?) Now ALL the girls from my study hall (all but one, ha), want to make the fabric flowers. K's girls are starting a local trend. :)

Oh- all that to say that today's photo represents my day of photo sessions that we had (yet another day of) absolutely perfect weather for!!!!

It's moments like this that I don't want to forget... this is why I blog....

In the middle of another crazy day, after working at my full-time job and in between returning client messages and preparing for tonight's photo shoot, I get a phone call from my nephew. His behavior chart reward is getting to come stay at our house!! Hanging out with me has never been an official award for someone before. And I absolutely love it. :) (And I don't know why, but I'm tearing up thinking about it. We don't get to see our niece and our nephews nearly enough!)

This little guy is SO happy every year when we sing happy birthday to him. Last year he said, "EVERYbody in, EVERYbody sing!" This year, before it was time, he said to me, "You sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!" So I did. And a few people joined in. He was extra happy about us singing it AGAIN when it was time for cake. Oh I love this little guy. And his little girly cousin that likes people singing to him more than she likes them singing to her.

Child Development Day at work is not the best day to come back to after an unexpected couple days away. But I have great friends that made it just a little easier. I'm sooooo blessed to have such amazing friends. They've really carried me this year. Always really, but especially now.

Today was a really tough day but it ended really great with my good friend J. I look terrible (but I'm blaming it on the day!) but she looks great for just finishing painting a basement. Thanks for being such a good friend!!!
